Things You Need to Know About Perfume Notes

Whether you apply your favorite fragrance on your first date or for your workplace, perfumes give you a certain presence. Perfume notes are ingredients that make up a particular fragrance.

Perfume manufacturers select notes carefully to ensure a fragrance both smells decent and evokes a certain experience. Fragrance notes are divided into three categories - top notes, heart notes and base notes.

Top Notes
When you spray a fragrance on a card or on your skin, immediately you will smell the top notes. It is your first impression of the fragrance, so it is generally packed with fresh and solid notes taken from citrus, fruit or fresh herb fragrance families. Top notes usually evaporate fast, lasting about 15 to 20 minutes after first spray. But, even though top notes don’t hang around they offer you soothing feeling at first spray and sets the tone for what’s to come.

Heart or Middle Notes
Heart notes form the core of the fragrance. These are considered as the “heart” of the fragrance. Heart notes or middle notes retain top notes’ aroma while also providing fresh fragrance. Heart notes are mostly floral, full-bodied notes and are the dominant of the fragrance; long-lasting than the top notes but less than the base notes.

Base Notes
Base or bottom notes form the foundation of the fragrance. Base notes usually have long-lasting staying power and you may notice several fragrances share the same base notes as there is less number of notes out there that work well on skin for long hours. Base notes also double up as notes that improves the staying power of the top and middle notes too, or add an additional element of complexity to the fragrance.

Know How to Identify Perfume Notes
Top notes are the notes you smell immediately after the scent first touches your skin. Once this initial fragrance fades, the middle or heart notes come in to form the essence of the scent. Base notes are long-lasting and is the one you remember most.

Every fragrance note adds a certain quality to the perfume. Some of the most common perfume note categories include fresh, floral, fruits, woods, spice, and musk, each which are generally used in particular note categories. For example, fresh and floral fragrances are always considered as top notes while woody and musk perfumes are always come in the form of base notes.
